When the Dodge Charger Daytona came on the racing scene in 1969, it set the NASCAR world on fire, largely via its innovative aerodynamics, which literally put it miles ahead of the competition.

Chassis DC-93, as this car is known, was the first of the iconic "wing cars" to break the 200-miles-per-hour (320-km/h) barrier on a closed circuit.

The car sat on pole at the Inaugural Talladega 500 in September 1969 with a top speed of 199.446 mph. It was then proven to 205 mph at the Chelsea Proving Grounds in July 1969.

The vehicle started life as a Charger 500 press car, and then was subsequently stolen. Incredibly, it was recovered and turned into the experimental race car you see here.

Powering the wing car is the venerable 426-cubic-inch Hemi, providing 575 horsepower to the rear wheels through a four-speed transmission. The V8 is fitted with a dry-sump oiling system, which allowed Chrysler engineers to lower the engine in the car for better aerodynamics.

The aerodynamic nose cone and rear wing helped the vehicle be extra-slippery, with a drag coefficient of just 0.29 — less than a Bugatti Chiron, or a McLaren F1. The nose and wing weren't the only thing changed either; the Daytona's body was also raked forward by 1.5 degrees, and the quarter panels were given extra bulges before the rear wheels for better air flow.

The vehicle will be crossing the auction block at Mecum's event in Indy , which takes place between May 14 and 22. The auction house estimates it will bring in between US$750,000 and US$1,000,000.
